Nearer My God To Thee – A Titanic review

Nearer My God To Thee – A Titanic review

I’ll never let go, Jack. I’ll never let go.

With those words launched 1 of the biggest pop culture phenomenons that the world has ever seen and live as the heart and soul of the greatest movie of all time. Yes I’m saying it, Titanic is the GOAT. Poor guy steals sexy rich girl from rich scumbag whilst on a ship destined for planet Earth’s most epic disaster lol doesn’t get much better than that. The movie has everything; story, drama, comedy, action, romance, fights, love making, dancing, all wrapped up into 1 tight little package set to the GOAT score by James Horner. You have 1 of the GOAT love songs in ‘My Heart Will Go On’ by Celine Dion that won all the awards and was played consistently for years on Radio and music video stations. Then you have the most impressive box office run of all time, the way Titanic performed week after week was unheard of. Made over 600 million slowly built up over the first 3 months extending into 7+ months of ticket sales. 99% of movies at the top of the Box Office lists made the majority of the total in their first 3 weekends while Titanic didn’t even crack 100 million. It had an unbelievable 18 weeks in a row of 10+ million weekends including 12 weeks in a row of 20+ million. By the end of its run, Titanic made over 2 billion in worldwide box office. They won 11 Oscars and should have been at least 1 more for Gloria Stuart. Acting both main cast and extras, Directing, Writing, Music, Cinematography, Costumes, Production Design, Special Effects, Costumes, Editing, it all came together flawlessly. When you add all that up, I don’t see how anyone could deny Titanic as the GOAT.

You really get an appreciation for the editing when you watch the deleted scenes bc if some of them weren’t cut, you would have got a totally different feel for certain scenes and the movie itself would be completely different. It’s still awesome to watch the deleted scenes bc they are all good, I’d def love to see an All In cut with every scene included in the runtime. I have loved this movie since I saw it for the first time in theatres 3 weeks after it came out bc that was the first showtime available. The popularity of this movie was insane, it was all anyone could talk about and it was everywhere. As a kid, like millions of others I was fascinated by the story of Titanic when we learned about it in school and had some fact books so when I found out about the movie, I was so excited. The thought of seeing the sinking on screen kind of blew my mind but that was nothing compared how blown away I was watching it in the theatre. Absolute perfection and makes it feel like you are right there but esp in 3D. It’s so well done that no matter how many times you see it, you still go through all the emotions like it was the first time you watched it.

It will be 111 years since the Titanic took her last breath at approx 2:20 am on April 15th, 1912. Just saw the movie again in theatres, the 3D experience is really incredible. This was the second time I’ve seen it in 3D at the theatre, first was 100 years to the day but I’ll go any time they want to run it in theatres. 3D puts it over the top and makes it feel like you’re sitting in a lifeboat watching it happen. This viewing really made me realize how much of an impact this movie had on me from little sayings I still use to always chasing that Jack/Rose kind of love. I almost wore out the tape watching it so much and I still expect the movie to stop when Capt Smith says, “I believe you may get your headlines, Mr Ismay” haha Fav scene still when Rose gets off the lifeboat like an idiot lol powerful moment with the peak of the score behind it but that’s what sealed Jacks fate not the door, I mean he literally tries to get on and realizes their weight is too much. But if she stays on the lifeboat then he figures out a way to survive, much easier to figure out how one person can survive vs two.

But if Jack survived then this movie would not be as popular or as good as it was, Jack had to die to create the sense of loss that the real Titanic disaster carried. Love that never got to fully bloom, potential never realized, songs never sung, pictures never drawn, it was all too real for over 1500 families. That’s the energy that fuels this movie, we so badly want Jack/Rose to reach New York and fully explore their love and live happily ever after. They were so close it hurts haha Rose agrees to get off with Jack and then they hit the iceberg. They learn that the ship will sink early but Jack gets handcuffed far below deck. Rose gets Jack free and they make it to the top only for Cal to chase them back down. They stay together after Titanic sinks and find something to float on but it can only hold one of them. And then it’s over. 1 of the moments that always hits me hard it when Jack sinks into the depths bc you know that there is no possible way she will ever see him again. Until that amazing ending. But we’ll get there haha I had to finally do a review for my favourite movie of all time so I’m gonna walk through the movie as best I can with my own thoughts added along the way.

Love that the movie starts with actual reel to reel footage of Titanic in 1912 with the haunting yet beautiful version of the main theme that has a female singing it. We begin the story with the dive team led by Brock Lovett, played by Bill Paxton(RIP), about to reach Titanic at the bottom of the ocean and try to retrieve some objects. You are immediately hit with strong emotions as the wreck of Titanic appears out of the darkness and somehow it is still majestic, man how incredible would that be to actually see it. We learn that Brock isn’t exactly there for the sentimental value as he wraps up his video saying, “Ok, enough of that bullshit” and they launch their search robot they call ‘Snoop Dogg’ and begin searching the wreckage. Seeing all of the objects and rooms still intact as the robot roams through feels very heavy but Titanic ended up being a tomb for 1500 people so it’s easy to understand why. 1 of Brock’s team, Lewis Bodine is controlling the robot and makes a joke when they see a sink that someone loeft the water running lol eventually Lewis flips over a door and underneath they find a safe and it is exactly what Brock was looking for, they are treasure hunters. As they bring the safe up from the bottom of the ocean, the people on the ship are popping champagne in celebration of the discovery but when Brock opens the safe, there is nothing inside except a leather folder and ruined papers. They were looking for some kind of diamond and Lewis comments, “The same thing happened to Geraldo and his career never recovered” and Brock is not happy.

As Brock is on the phone trying to calm the investors, the rest of the team finds that there is a portrait inside of the folder and when they remove the dirt from paper, it reveals a beautiful woman wearing nothing but a diamond necklace, the one they are looking for. When Brock confirms it by using the picture of the necklace he says, “I’ll be goddamned” lol Next we see an older woman, played by Gloria Stuart(RIP), in her house making pottery and on the TV is Brock talking about their discovery of the painting as the reporter questions their motives of looking for treasure but Brock defends it asking if a portrait like that deserved to stay lost at the bottom of the ocean where nobody could appreciate it. When the woman see’s the portrait she is all of a sudden fixated on the TV and asks her daughter to turn it up and when it is fully revealed she remarks, “I’ll be goddamned” LOL always makes me laugh. Later one of Brock’s team members Bobby gets a satellite call and urges Brock who can’t be bothered, to take it saying, “Trust me, buddy. You want to take this call.” The call is from the older woman, whose name is Rose Calvert, and she asks Brock is he has found the heart of the ocean yet? This immediately snaps Brock to attention and he asks if she knows whothe woman in the picture is and she says yes, that the woman in the picture is her.

Rose is immediately whisked to Brock’s ship the Keldysh but Lewis is not sold yet, “LEWIS: She’s a goddamned liar! Some nut case seeking money or publicity. God only knows why, like that Russian babe, Anesthesia….Rose Dewitt Bukater died on the Titanic when she was 17, right? BROCK: That’s right. LEWIS: If she had lived, she’d be over 100. BROCK: 101 next month! LEWIS: Okay, so she’s a very old goddamned liar. Look, I’ve already done the background on this woman all the way back to the ’20s when she was working as an actress. An actress! There’s your first clue, Sherlock. Her name was Rose Dawson back then. Then she marries this guy named Calvert. They move to Cedar Rapids and she punches out a couple of kids. Now, Calvert’s dead, and from what I hear, Cedar Rapids is dead. BROCK: And everybody who knows about the diamond is supposed to be dead or on this boat, but she knows.” Lol so good. Rose seemingly brought her whole life with her as there are a lot of bags and a fish bowl lol Brock greets her in her cabin and wonders if she needs anything and she asks to see her drawing.

Before Brock shows her the drawing, he quizzes her about the diamond asking who the secret claim would have been made under and she answers correctly saying someone named Hockely. Rose says it was dreadfully heavy and she only wore it that one time but her daughter wonders if she really believes it is her. The date on the painting is April 14, 1912 so if Rose is the woman in the painting, Brock says she is his new best friend lol Bill Paxton was the perfect guy to play this role bc despite his initial intentions being sleazy, there is a genuine goodness to his performance that makes you almost want to root for him to find the diamond. Brock shows rose some items they have recovered from her stateroom and Rose is giddy to see them as Brock asks if she is ready to go back to Titanic. Lewis narrates the the sinking and it is gold haha, “Kay, here we go. She hits the berg on the starboard side, right? She kind of bumps along punching holes like Morse code– dit-dit-dit– along the side, below the waterline. Then the forward compartments start to flood. Now as the water level rises, it spills over the watertight bulkheads which unfortunately don’t go any higher than E deck. So now as the bow goes down, the stern rises up slow at first, then faster and faster until finally she’s got her whole ass is sticking up in the air and that’s a big ass. We’re talking 20-30,000 tons. And the hull’s not designed to deal with that pressure, so what happens? She splits, right down to the keel and the stern falls back level. Then as the bow sinks, it pulls the stern vertical and finally detaches. Now, the stern section just kind of bobs there like a cork for a couple of minutes, floods and finally goes under about 2:20 a.m. two hours and 40 minutes after the collision. The bow section planes away landing about a half a mile away going 20, 30 knots when it hits the ocean floor. ( lmitates Crashing) Pretty cool, huh?” Rose thanks him for his forensics analysis but says the experience of it was somewhat different.

Brock asks her if she would share it with them as Rose stares at the videos exploring the wreckage as her real memories of what she see’s start coming back and she breaks down into tears. Her daughter Lizzy wants to take her back to her room to rest but Rose defiantly says NO! Brock readies his tape recorder as Rose starts saying, “It’s been 84 years” and Brock cuts her off telling her not to worry and any memories she has are fine but she asks if he wants to hear the story or not haha Rose starts again, “It’s been 84 years, and I can still smell the fresh paint. The china had never been used. The sheets had never been slept in. Titanic was called “The Ship of Dreams” and it was, it really was.” The transition from the wreck of Titanic in present day to 1912 in all her glory is prob the best scene transition in movie history, as soon as I watch that moment it immediately changes my mood and invests me in the movie for the next 3 hours. The music has a happy vibe to it and the brightness of Southhampton really helps you feel the excitment that was on the docks that day. A father and his young daughter stare in awe at Titanic as the Dad remarks, “Big boat, huh? GIRL: Daddy, it’s a ship. DAD: haha You’re right.” Little exchanges like that make the extras real and not just background collateral.

We see a fancy car open it’s doors and out steps the beautiful woman from the portrait, played by Kate Winslet, in an expensive dress with her mother and her fiance Cal, played by Billy Zane and young Rose is not impressed, “ROSE: I don’t see what all the fuss is about. It doesn’t look any bigger than the Mauritania. CAL: You can be blase about some things, Rose, but not about Titanic. It’s over 100 feet longer than Mauritania and far more luxurious… Your daughter is far too difficult to impress, Ruth. RUTH: So this is the ship they say is unsinkable. CAL: It is unsinkable! God Himself could not..sink this ship. What!? MAN: Sir,you have to check your baggage through the main terminal. – It’s round that way, sir. CAL: I put my faith in you, good sir. hands him cash – Now, kindly see my man.” Cal’s exchange with the Man always makes me laugh, flawless performance from Billy Zane like he really was Cal. We see all the hussle and bussle of passengers scrambling to get on the ship as the departure time is quickly approaching. As Rose boards Titanic, she was not in a position to enjoy it as she felt like it was a slave ship taking her back to America in chains. The life of a woman in 1912, esp one that was married to a rich guy like Cal was it’s own circle of hell that would destroy you if you didn’t embrace it but embracing it meant she would have to be someone she wouldn’t like.

Next we go inside a bar where an intense game of poker is being played and when they show the pot on the table containing 2 tickets for Titanic, you immediately understand why. At the table are Jack Dawson, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, Fabrizio, played by Danny Nucci, and 2 swedish men. Fabrizio laments that Jack has better everything they have but Jack says when you got nothing, you got nothing to lose. It’s time to play their cards and Fabrizio and 1 of the swedish men have nothing. The other swedish man shows 2 pair, a hand hard to beat, and Jack apologizes to Fabrizio who starts to freak out but Jack stops him saying he is sorry bc Fabrizio won’t see his mother again for a very long time. Jack has a full house which beats 2 pair and he starts to celebrate. The way Jack “WOOO’s” here is exactly how I celebrate when I get excited for sports or other things so I know I was influenced by this scene, just one of the ways that this movie had a big impact on my life. It looks like the other swedish man is going to hit Jack but he ends up hitting his friend instead lol Fabrizio is excited, “I go to America!” haha loved that and Jack is excited to be going home until the bartender reminds them Titanic is leaving in 5 minutes.

As Jack and Fabrizio scramble to the ship, Jack is lovin life, “JACK: We’re riding in high style now. We’re a couple of regular swells. We’re practically goddamn royalty, ragazzo mio. FABRIZIO: You see, it’s my destino! Like I told you, I go to America to be milionario.” lol They make it just as the ship is pulling away and manage to convince the officer to let them on with Jack without going back through the checks saying they are both Americans and don’t have lice. He lets them on and Jack excitedly remarks they are the “luckiest sons of bitches in the world!” as they go on deck to wave goodbye to everyone on the docks despite not knowing anyone. Most watching would say that is wrong knowing what is coming but I feel secure saying that Jack probably would still say that statement was true. At least for him. Always loved Fabrizio’s, “Goodbye! I will never, forget-a-you!” The music here is just incredible, just fills me with all the best emotions like hope, wonder, excitement, etc… and by this point I am absolutely locked in to the story. Fn cool to see the propellers start going. Jack and Fabrizio find their room as 2 confused swedish men wonder where their buddies are, “Vares, Sven?” haha we see Cal and Rose settling into their rooms and it’s a stark contrast as Cal checks out their private promenade deck and dismissively waves off an officer. Only a small moment but the little wave off added so much realism for me as that was exactly what you would expect a rich guy to act. Rose is getting her paintings set up and Cal talks about what a waste of money they are as Rose counters that Cal has no taste. Cal asks the name of the artist, “CAL: What’s the artist’s name? ROSE: Something Picasso. CAL: “Something Picasso.” He won’t amount to a thing. He won’t, trust me.” LOL so good and his little, ‘trust me’ is perfect. We see the safe that Brock found put into the wardrobe.

The Unsinkable Molly Brown, played by Kathy Bates, comes aboard when Titanic see’s land for the final time in Cherbourg. Then it’s time to see what Titanic can do as Capt Smith, played by King Theoden himself Bernard Hill, orders First Officer Murdoch to let her loose, “CAPT SMITH: Take her to sea, Mr. Murdoch. Let’s stretch her legs.” Ah man 1 of my favourite scenes and just makes it hurt more that Titanic never got to show what she was truly capable of. We see Jack and Fabrizio at the front of the ship watching the dolphins jump with the ship in a really cool scene. Fabrizio jokes that he can see the Statue of Liberty, “very small of course” and Jack starts yelling “I’M THE KING OF THE WORLD!!” and Wooing the same way he celebrated the poker win. Titanic was def the ship of dreams for Jack and Fabrizio. In the 1st Class dining area, Bruce Ismay, played by Jonathan Hyde, is at lunch with Rose, Cal, Rose’s mother Ruth played by Frances Fisher, Molly Brown andmaster shipbuilder Thomas Andrews played by Victor Garber. Bruce brags about Titanic being the largest moving object ever made and talks about how he came up with the idea for Titanic as Mr Andrews gives him credit saying he may have built it but Bruce’s desire for, “a steamer so grand in scale and so luxurious in its appointments that its supremacy would never be challenged” deserves the credit. As they are talking, Rose lights a cigarette and when Ruth says she doesn’t like that, Rose blows smoke in her face as Cal grabs it and puts it out LOL too funny.

Bruce takes credit for the name Titanic talking about wanting, “to convey sheer size, and the size means stability, Luxury, and above all, strength.” Rose must have been in a mood bc she asks if Bruce has heard of Freud and his, “ideas about the male preoccupation with size might be of particular interest to you.” lol Bruce is offended but Rose immediately excuses herself and leaves before any kind of confrontation. “BRUCE: Freud– Who is he? ls he a passenger?” lol love the little things like that. Down on the 3rd class decks, Jack and Fabrizio are havin a smoke as Jack sketches the Father and Daughter that we saw on the docks at the launch and they start talking with an Irish passenger named Tommy played by Jason Barry. They bond laughing over the sight of officers bringing the 1st class dogs down to their decks to take a shite and Jack says it’s to remind them of where they rank in the scheme of things. Always made me chuckle when they introduce themselves, Tommy says Hi and Hello after each introduction but his tone of voice when he says just sounds so curt haha prob something nobody else notices but me. Tommy starts to ask if Jack ever makes money selling his art when Rose appears at the railing of the 1st class deck and Jack see’s her, completely mesmerized by love at first sight. Rose glances at Jack and then looks away but quickly gives him a second look. Fabrizio laughs and waves his hand in front of Jack’s face but his gaze doesn’t break and Tommy has a funny comment, “Oh, forget it, boyo. You’d as likely have angels fly out your arse than get next to the likes of her.” 99% of the time he is not wrong.

That night, Rose is completely overwhelmed by the future she wants absolutely no part of and has reached her breaking point so she sprints down the ship until she gets to the stern or the back of the ship. She climbs over the railing and looks like she is about to jump when Jack appears and tells her not to. She tells him to stay back and lets go of the railing for a microsecond to try to scare Jack lol she says she will jump if he gets closer so he responds, “No you won’t” but the way Leo says it is almost like a little boy trying to show authority lol Rose gets mock offended that a 3rd class passenger would tell her what to do but Jack says she would have done it already if she was gonna jump. It’s clear Rose doesn’t actually want to kill herself, she just can’t see a way out of her own personal hell but that was about to change. Jack says if she jumps he is going in after her and Rose tells him he would be killed by the fall and Jack says it would hurt but it’s the freezing water that worries him the most and the look on Rose’s face says she had not considered the temperature of the water. Jack tries to explain: “JACK: Well, they have some of the coldest winters around. I grew up there near Chippewa Falls. I remember when I was a kid, me and my father, we went ice fishing out on Lake Wissota. Ice fishing is,you know, where you– ROSE: angrily I know what ice fishing is!(LOL) JACK: Sorry. You just seem like, you know, kind of an indoor girl. Anyway, I, uh… I fell through some thin ice and I’m telling you… water that cold, like right down there it hits you like a thousand knives stabbing you all over your body. You can’t breathe, you can’t think– at least not about anything but the pain. Which is why I’m not looking forward to jumping in there after you. Like I said… I don’t have a choice. I guess I’m kind of hoping you’ll come back over the rail and get me off the hook here. ROSE: You’re crazy. JACK: That’s what everybody says, but with all due respect, miss, I’m not the one hanging off the back of a ship here. Come on. Come on, give me your hand. You don’t want to do this. Rose gives Jack her hand Whew! JACK: I’m Jack Dawson. ROSE: Rose Dewitt Bukater. JACK: I’m gonna have to get you to write that one down.” lol

But as Rose is climbing back up the railing, her dress gets under her shoe and when she steps on the railing she slips and Jack is barely able to hang on as she screams loudly. This brings officers on deck running to the stern. Jack is able to pull Rose up and over the railing as they land on the deck with him on top of her and her skirt ripped up the leg as the officers come upon them and immediately assume Jack has attacked Rose. Jack is put in handcuffs as Cal and other 1st class members show up and Cal starts to go after Jack but Rose stops him saying that Jack actually saved her to the surprise of everyone. Rose says she was leaning over to see…she can’t think of anything at first but is doing a circle with her finger as she talks so Cal finishes her thought assuming she wanted to see the propellers. Jack doesn’t say anything about what really happened and goes along with Rose’s story so he is released and Cal shows his gratitude by offering him 20 bucks lol Rose is offended so Cal tries to give himself some entertainment by inviting Jack to dinner with them in the 1st Class Lounge knowing it will be a disaster and Jack accepts. Jack bums a few smokes off of Cal’s bodyguard Lovejoy played by David Warner, who comments about Rose slipping so suddenly yet Jack had time to remove his jacket and his shoes. You knew that guy was gonna be trouble for Jack and Rose.

Cal surprises Rose in her stateroom later with a gift and acting lovingly towards her. You might think he actually did care for her but with rich assholes like Cal, it isn’t about love, it’s about conquest and control. I always assumed Rose was a virgin which is why Cal was pushing so hard for her to “come to him.” Rose is not like most other women Cal could end up with so he see’s it as a challenge and if he can break her and make her his, then he will feel like a conquering King and be free to move on to his next conquest. His gift is the necklace that Brock Lovett has been searching for, Le Coeur De La Mer, The Heart of the Ocean and says it is a “reminder of my feelings for you” but he couldn’t have sounded more insincere when he says it haha Rose puts on the necklace and it seems she is really debating on whether to give herself to Cal. The next day we see Jack and Rose walking around the decks with Jack talking about his life and we learn his parents died when he was 15 so he has been drifting around from place to place, country to country, using his skills as an artist to make enough to survive. They start talking about the night they met and Rose thanks him for her discretion and seems embarrassed about it so she tries to explain herself, “ROSE: Look, I know what you must be thinking. Poor little rich girl. What does she know about misery? JACK: No. No, that’s not what I was thinking. What I was thinking was what could have happened to this girl to make her think she had no way out? Rose: Well, l– It was everything. It was my whole world and all the people in it and the inertia of my life plunging ahead and me, powerless to stop it. shows Jack her engagement ring JACK: God! Look at that thing. You would have gone straight to the bottom. ROSE: All of Philadelphia society will be there and all the while I feel I’m… standing in the middle of a crowded room screaming at the top of my lungs and no one even looks up. JACK: Do you love him? ROSE: Pardon me? JACK: Do you love him? ROSE: You’re being very rude. You shouldn’t be asking me this. JACK: Well, it’s a simple question. Do you love the guy or not? ROSE: This is not a suitable conversation. JACK: Why can’t you just answer the question? Rose: Nervous Laughter This is absurd. You don’t know me, and I don’t know you and we are not having this conversation at all. You are rude and uncouth and presumptuous and I am leaving now. Jack. Mr. Dawson, it’s been a pleasure. I sought you out to thank you and now I have thanked you… JACK: And you’ve insulted me. ROSE: Well, you deserved it.” Man did these two have great chemistry together.

Neither of them is leaving so a frustrated Rose snatches Jack’s art folder wondering what is inside but she is quickly taken over by the amazing drawings and sits down to get a better look at them. She finds portraits of nude women and almost gets a little jealous asking if they are from life and saying one women he used a lot must have been his lover lol but Jack says she had great hands, that’s it as he reveals she was a one legged prostitute. “JACK: Ah, she had a good sense of humor, though. Oh, and this lady… she used to sit at this bar every night wearing every piece of jewelry she owned just waiting for her long-lost love. Called her Madame Bijou. See how her clothes are all moth-eaten? ROSE: Well, you have a gift, Jack. You do. You see people. JACK: I see you. ROSE: And? JACK: You wouldn’t have jumped.” lol in the 1st Class lounge, Ruth and a couple other women get up to leave when they see Molly Brown bc they see her as vulgar and uncouth but they can’t get rid of her. In reality, Molly is who they wish they could be but are too afraid so they don’t want her around to remind them. Next we see Bruce Ismay having a conversation with Capt Smith about the last 4 boilers not being lit yet. Capt Smith doesn’t want to push the engines on the 1st voyage esp considering they are making great time as is but Bruce wants the press to be talking about the speed of Titanic and if they light the last 4 boilers, they can get into New York much earlier than expected and Capt Smith can retire with a bang. Capt Smith silently agrees and Bruce is pleased.

Jack and Rose continue their walk on the decks, “JACK: Well, after that I worked on a squid boat in Monterey. Then I went down to Los Angeles to the pier in Santa Monica and started doing portraits there fourteen cents apiece. ROSE: Why can’t I be like you, Jack. Just head out for the horizon whenever I feel like it? Say we’ll go there sometime to that pier even if we only ever just talk about it. JACK: No, we’ll do it. We’ll drink cheap beer. We’ll ride on the roller coaster till we throw up. Then we’ll ride horses on the beach right in the surf. But you’ll have to do it like a real cowboy. None of that sidesaddle stuff.” What a life they could have lived, and the audience wants it so bad for them. “ROSE: You mean, one leg on each side? JACK: Yeah. ROSE: Can you show me? JACK: Sure… if you like. ROSE: Teach me to ride like a man. JACK: And chew tobacco like a may-an. ROSE: giggles And spiyit like a may-an. JACK: They didn’t teach you that in finishing school? ROSE: No! JACK: Well, come on, I’ll show you. Let’s do it. I’ll show you how. Come on. ROSE: Jack, no! Jack, no! Wait, Jack. No, Jack. I couldn’t possibly, Jack.” Jack gets really into teaching her how to hock it up and arch her neck lol always laugh at Rose’s first little spit but eventually she gets a good one. Unfortunately Ruth, Molly and their crew walkup right as Jack hocks up a huge loogie and has to swallow it hahah nasty. Couldn’t be a worse 1st impression for Jack to Ruth but even if it was a good one, Ruth can see people to and she knows her daughter see’s Jack as they way out of this life so she will do anything to stop it. I’m sure Ruth had her own Jack in her life at one point so she knows where this is heading. The dinner bell rings as Rose leaves saying she will see Jack at dinner and Molly tries to get Jack’s attention but he is smitten by Rose. Molly asks Jack what heis wearing to dinner and Jack says the clothes he is wearing which is def not a Tuxedo but Molly has a son about the same size as Jack so she brings him to her room to get him some more appropriate clothes.

The suit fits perfect with Molly saying, “You shine up like a new penny.” In the suit, Jack is treated like every other 1st class passanger and seems taken aback by it at first but settles in and waits at the bottom of the Grand Staircase. Cal is def not expecting to see him in a suit so when they head to dinner, Cal and Ruth walk right by Jack without recognizing or acknowledging him. Jack actually extends to Cal who leave shim hanging so Jack shakes hands with the air intstead lol but then he catches a glimpse of Rose who looks absolutely stunning in her dress and is completely fixated on her. Jack kisses her hand and says he saw it in a Nickelodeon once and always wanted to do it. They eventually catch up to Cal who is blown away when he realizes it is Jack and says he could almost pass for a gentleman. “JACK: Almost. CAL: Extroardinary” Even when he is trying to be nice he is still a dick haha Rose walks around with Jack giving him information on all of the notable 1st Class passengers including Jacob Astor, “ASTOR: Are you of the Boston Dawsons? JACK: No, the Chippewa Falls Dawsons, actually. ASTOR: Oh, yes. Yes.” Oh right, those guys haha nobody has any clue Jack is a 3rd class passenger but of course Ruth needs to crush this problem, “RUTH: Tell us of the accommodations in steerage, Mr. Dawson. I hear they’re quite good on this ship. Jack: The best I’ve seen, ma’am. Hardly any rats.” Advantage – Jack.

Cal lets everyone know about Jack and why he is there as Bruce Ismay continues to give credit to Mr Andrews for Titanic as Rose compliments Mr Andrews and the wonder of a ship he has built. Jack is busy trying to respond to Ruth’s barbs, “JACK: Well, right now, my address is the R.M.S. Titanic. After that, I’m on God’s good humor. RUTH: And how is it you have means to travel? JACK: I work my way from place to place, You know, tramp steamers and such. But I won my ticket on Titanic here at a lucky hand at poker. A very lucky hand. ARCHIBALD GRACIE: All life is a game of luck. CAL: A real man makes his own luck, Archie. Right, Dawson? JACK: Mmmhmm. RUTH: And you find that sort of rootless existence appealing, do you? Molly stares daggers at Ruth JACK: Well, yes, ma’am, I do. I mean, got everything I need right here with me. Got air in my lungs and a few blank sheets of paper. I mean, I love waking up in the morning not knowing what’s going to happen or who I’m going to meet, where I’m going to wind up. Just the other night, I was sleeping under a bridge, and now here I am on the grandest ship in the world having champagne with you fine people. – ( Laughter) – I’ll take some more of that. waiter pours Jack champagne JACK: I figure life’s a gift, and I don’t intend on wasting it. You never know what hand you’re going to get dealt next. You learn to take life as it comes at you. Here you go, Cal. tosses Cal matches To make each day count.” Fcking great speech that put Ruth in her place and prob won over everyone else at the table. I dont think Cal saw Jack as a threat until that moment. Also, Cal’s reaction to Jack tossing the matches was just perfect, almost like ‘did that just happen’, he played this part to a fn T.

Dinner starts to wind down as Molly talks about coming into their money and how she hid it in the stove and her husband came home drunk and tried to light a fire lol the men get up to go have Brandy’s in the smoking room while the women stay and chat at the table. Jack gets up to leave but as he does he slips Rose a note that says, “Make it count. Meet me at the clock.” Rose is torn but decides to meet Jack at the clock and he turns to her and says, “You wanna go to a real, party?” Next is 1 of my fav scenes in the movie, the party in 3rd class. Cannot express how much I love the music being played I could listen to it all fn day. The Irish absolutely know how to party lol the beer is flowing as we see a drunk guy fall and then ask for a recovery beer lol and the joy is palpable as everyone dances and sings and the men have arm wrestling contests. Jack dances with the little girl Cora he was sketching with her Dad on the decks and then grabs Rose for a dance who mock protests saying she doesn’t know how but he doesn’t either so just go with it. Cora looks grumpy so Jack says she is still his best girl and she smiles lol love that. Jack tries to impress doing a little dance on the stage but Rose is game and does the same dance to match him. Then they grab eachothers hands and start into a spin laughing and yelling with pure joy on their faces. That moment is the embodiment of true love. Really powerful moment. Eventually they stop dancing and Rose almost chugs an entire beer lol Tommy loses an arm wrestling match saying “2 outta tree, 2 outta tree!” One of those quotes I still use to this day. Rose has had enough of the tough guy displays and wants to get in on it so she readies herself and then slowly raises up like a ballerina until she is standing directly on the tips of her toes lol unreal and all of the men looking on are more than impressed haha she holds as long as she can until she collapses into Jack’s arms but it’s this moment that Lovejoy, who has been sent by Cal to find Rose, see’s this and reports back to Cal.

Next morning Rose is at breakfast with Cal, “CAL: I had hoped you would come to me last night. ROSE: I was tired. CAL: Your exertions below decks were no doubt exhausting. ROSE: I see you had that undertaker of a manservant follow me. How typical. CAL: You will never behave like that again, Rose. Do you understand? ROSE: I’m not a foreman in one of your mills that you can command. I’m your fiancée. CAL: My fiancée? My fiancée?!! Cal flips the table over Yes,you are, and my wife! My wife in practice if not yet by law, so you will honor me. You will honor me the way a wife is required to honor a husband. Because I will not be made out a fool, Rose. Is this in anyway unclear? ROSE: No. CAL: Good. Excuse me.” Good look at what life would be like as Mrs Hockley. It’s not about love, it’s about Jack winning and that thought tortures someone like Cal. Rose tries to help their maid Trudy clean up but is clearly shaken up and Trudy assures Rose that she can handle the mess herself. Later that day, Ruth comes in the room and excuses Trudy who is tightening Rose’s corset and takes over herself. Ruth forbids Rose from seeing Jack again and Rose tries to just brush it off but Ruth reminds her that they have no money of their own and that her father left them with bad debts covered by a good name. That name is the only way they could marry into a family like the Hockley’s and will ensure their survival. Rose laments this being put on her shoulders and Ruth accuses her of being selfish lol Ruth turns on the waterworks talking about having to work as a seamstress again and Rose is resigned to doing what her mother wants saying it is so unfair to which Ruth agrees.

Back in his regular clothes, Jack tries to get into the 1st class mass to talk to Rose but is denied entry and Lovejoy see’s this and comes out to make sure that the attendants escort Jack back to 3rd class by giving them a generous tip. Later that day we see Rose, Ruth, Cal and others walking the deck with Capt Smith and Mr Andrews as an iceberg warning is handed to Capt Smith but he assures them it is normal and that they are actually speeding up. Rose asks Mr Andrews about doing the math and realizing there are not enough lifeboats for everyone on board and Mr Andrews chuckles saying she is right and that he made enough room for more lifeboats but was overruled bc the deck would be too cluttered. Cal remarks that they are a waste of deckspace anyways on an unsinkable ship. Mr Andrews assures Rose she can sleep soundly as he built her a good ship and that is all the lifeboat she will need. As they head down the deck, Jack has “borrowed” a hat and coat from a chair on the 1st Class deck and ushers Rose into a room so they can talk, “ROSE: Jack, this is impossible. I can’t see you. JACK: I need to talk to you. ROSE: No, Jack, no. Jack, I’m engaged. I’m marrying Cal. I love Cal. JACK: Rose, you’re no picnic. All right, you’re a spoiled little brat even, but under that you’re the most amazingly astounding wonderful girl..woman, that I’ve ever known and… ROSE: Jack, I… JACK: No, let me try and get this out. You’re, you’re ama– I’m not an idiot. I know how the world works. I’ve got ten bucks in my pocket. I have nothing to offer you and I know that. I understand. But I’m too involved now. You jump, I jump, remember? I can’t turn away without knowing you’ll be all right. That’s all that I want. ROSE: Well, I’m fine. I’ll be fine, really. JACK: Really? I don’t think so. They’ve got you trapped, Rose and you’re going to die if you don’t break free.. Maybe not right away because you’re strong, but sooner or later that fire that I love about you, Rose… that fire is going to burn out. ROSE: It’s not up to you to save me, Jack. JACK: You’re right. Only you can do that. ROSE: I’m going back. Leave me alone.” Tough bc that seemed like that was it.

We see Rose at a table with Ruth and other women as Ruth goes on about the wedding details but Rose is completely zoned out and is looking at a little girl being reprimanded by her Mother for slouching and forced to sit straight. Rose can see the future for her and any female children she has. That ended up being her breaking point. Jack is at the front of the ship leaning on the railing looking crushed at the thought of moving on without Rose when she suddenly surprises him and says, “I changed my mind.” Man that moment hits me so hard every time. Jack asks if she trusts him and she says she does, so he brings her over and asks her to step up onto the railing as he holds her hand. They both settle in and he tells her to open her eyes and when she does it looks and feels like she is flying as Jack sweetly sings ‘Come Josephine my flying machine, going up she goes, Up she goes.” This leads to 1 of the greatest kisses in movie/TV/film/Theatre history as they embrace with the sun setting perfectly behind them creating an unbelievable scene. The flute in the score right before they kiss gets me every time. Once again the score hits a home run during this scene. This would end up being a very significant moment, “ROSE-NARRATING: That was the last time Titanic ever saw daylight. BROCK: So we’re up to dusk the night of the sinking. Six hours to go. LEWIS: Incredible. There’s Smith and he’s standing there and he’s got the iceberg warning in his fucking hand, excuse me, his hand, and he’s ordering more speed. BROCK: Twenty-six years of experience working against him. He figures anything big enough to sink the ship, they’re gonna see in time to turn. The ship’s too big with too small a rudder. It doesn’t corner worth a damn. Everything he knows is wrong.” Love this scene bc you can see that Brock and his crew are starting see Titanic as more than a payday.

Jack and Rose end up in Rose and Cal’s suite as Jack admires the paintings and recognizes Monet. Rose wants a portrait of herself and shows Jack the Heart of the Ocean, “JACK: That’s nice. What is it, a sapphire? ROSE: A diamond, a very rare diamond. Jack, I want you to draw me like one of your French girls… wearing this. JACK: All right. ROSE: Wearing only this.” Oh man business just picked up lol Rose comes in wearing her robe and then takes it off for what was probably the greatest moment of my 14 year old life lol what a stunning beauty Kate Winslet is. Jack is all of us when he tells her to go lie on the bed..the couch hahah Jack creates the portrait that Brock and his team recovered as we cut to the present day with everyone listening to the story with smiles in their faces in a trance, Brock’s is priceless haha Lewis asks what happened next as Rose chuckles, “Did we do it?” but Rose says Jack was a professional. Back on Titanic, Rose gives Jack the diamond to put back in the safe. Lovejoy reports to Cal that nobody has seen Rose which is absurd to Cal since here are only so many places she can be on a ship and demands that Lovejoy find her. Back on Titanic we see Second Officer Lightoller, played by Jonathan Phillips, talking to Capt Smith about how calm it is adding that will make the ‘Bergs harder to see. Capt Smith quietly contemplates it and then heads to bed telling him to maintain speed. Jack and Rose are about to leave when Lovejoy returns to the suite so they run out another door but he hears them and the chase begins. They get to an elevator and head down just before Lovejoy can stop them and Rose gives him the finger haha they have to run down through the boiler rooms to escape him and that finally gets him off their trail. Back in their suite, Cal is checking the safe and finds the necklace and the portrait of Rose with a note from her saying, “Darling, now you can keep us both locked in your safe. – Rose” Cal starts to tear it in half but stops and tells Lovejoy he has a better idea.

Jack and Rose enter the cargo hold and see a car so Rose gets in the back and Jack pretends to be the driver, “JACK” Where to, miss? ROSE: To the stars.” Rose pulls Jack into the backseat as they get ready to make love for what I assume is the first time for both of them. Jack waits for Rose to give her consent and she does, “Put your hands on me Jack” and he obliges lol incredible shot of Titanic that looks like the moon took it. Jack and Rose make love and we get the iconic shot from the outside of Rose’s hand pressing up against the fogged up window and then slides down leaving a finger trail. 2 attendants are pointed in the direction of the cargo hold and they see the hand print on the car but when they open the door to catch them they are gone. We see Jack and Rose burst out of a door laughing and on a lovers high. Rose tells Jack that when the ship docks, she is getting off with him and jack smiles saying it’s crazy and Rose agrees saying it doesn’t make any sense and that is why she trusts it. The lookouts are trying to stay warm with one saying he can smell ice and the other giving him shit for it haha they notice Jack and Rose embracing with 1 saying they are warmer than they are and the other says if that’s what it takes to get warm he would rather not. At that moment, death emerges from its shadow in the form of a massive iceberg directly ahead of them and the lookouts are terrified as they try to ring the Officers, “LOOKOUT: Pick up, you bastards! Is there anyone there? OFFICER: Yes, what do you see? LOOKOUT:- Iceberg! Right ahead! OFFICER: Thank you.” The way the score kicks up at this moment is just perfection, I can literally feel the intensity rise as I write this lol

First Officer Murdoch orders the ship hard a-starboard and full astern as the head stoker ordered his men to shut all the dampers. Love the shots of the propellers stopping and then starting to reverse. It takes what seems like forever but Titanic finally starts to turn and it almost has enough room to make it but ends up hitting it hard on the starboard side and then grinds along it. No matter how many times I watch, I still hope they can start to turn just a bit sooner and avoid the iceberg, testament to the amazing story they are telling. Mr Andrews feels the shudder in his cabin and the look of fear on his face says he knows that only something bad would have caused it. The impact opens up the side of the ship and when it happens, the 2 crewmen looking for Jack and Rose in the cargo hold are killed by the rush of water. First Officer Murdoch orders the watertight door to be closed as the stokers scramble to get out with the lead stoker yelling, “Go lads go!” always loved that, before the doors close with one coming seriously close to losing his legs but it ended up being a really cool moment. After the iceberg is gone, the music is so intense with what sounds like a trumpet hitting the same 2 notes over and over. 1st Officer Murdoch has them note the time in the log as Capt Smith enters asking what happened, “CAPT SMITH: What was that, Mr. Murdoch? MURDOCH: An iceberg, sir. I put her hard to starboard and ran the engines full astern but it was too close. I tried to port round it but she hit and the… CAPT SMITH: Close the watertight doors. MURDOCH: The doors are closed, sir. CAPT SMITH: All stop. CREWMAN: Aye, sir! ringing CAPT SMITH: Find the carpenter. Get him to sound the ship. MURDOCH: Yes, sir!” In 3rd class we see water has already started entering the ship as Tommy encourages Fabrizio to get going bc he knows this is gonna be bad. They run down the hall with rats in front as Tommy says “If this is the direction the rats are going that’s good enough for me.” Prob smart to be honest.

Passengers are coming out and asking questions but the crewmen are still saying that it was no big deal and that they should be underway again soon so everyone should return to their rooms. Cal approaches one saying that he has been robbed and to fetch the master at arms. Meanwhile, Capt Smith is hearing about the damage to the ship, “CREWMAN: Boiler room six is flooded eight feet above the plate. And the mail hold is worse. She’s all buckled in in the forward hold. CAPT SMITH: Can you shore up? CREWMAN: Not unless the pumps get ahead. CAPT SMITH: Have you seen the damage in the mail hold? CREWMAN: No, she’s already underwater.” Jack overhears this and knows that this is really bad so Rose suggests that they warn her mother and Cal. Big mistake bc as they walk into the room, Lovejoy slips the diamond necklace into Jack’s pocket and once inside the room Cal accuses Jack of stealing the diamond and has Jack searched. They find the diamond and Jack immediately tells Rose they put it in his pocket and not to believe them as Cal tells him to shut up but it looks bad for Jack since the coat he “borrowed” was reported stolen. Rose says she was with him the whole time and Cal says maybe he did it when she was putting her clothes back on. They take Jack away as he pleads with Rose not to believe them and that she knows he didn’t do it. Brutal moment since this really cut down their chances of surviving.

We see a conversation between Capt Smith, Mr Andrews and Bruce Ismay as they survey the damage, “BRUCE: Most unfortunate, Captain. MR ANDREWS: Water… 1 4 feet above the keel in ten minutes– In the forepeak, in all three holds and in the boiler room six. OFFICER: That’s right, sir. BRUCE: When can we get underway, damn it!? MR ANDREWS: That’s five compartments! She can stay afloat with the first four compartments breached but not five… not five. As she goes down by the head the water will spill over the tops of bulkheads at E deck from one to the next. Back! and back! There’s no stopping it. CAPT SMITH: The pumps.. If we opened the doors MR ANDREWS: The pumps buy you time, but minutes only. From this moment, no matter what we do Titanic will founder. BRUCE: But this ship can’t sink. MR ANDREWS: She’s made of iron, sir! I assure you, she can… and she will. It is a mathematical certainty. CAPT SMITH: How much time? MR ANDREWS: An hour. Two at most. CAPT SMITH: And how many aboard, Mr. Murdoch? MR MURDOCH: Two thousand two hundred souls on board, sir. CAPT SMITH: Well, I believe you may get your headlines, Mr. Ismay.” Man such a heavy, powerful scene, brings tears to my eyes as I write this. Incredible acting all around but the reaction from Bruce Ismay was masterful bc it summed up the feelings of 99% of people that even knew about Titanic, the unsinkable ship can’t sink esp on its maiden voyage. But as has been proven time and time again over the course of history, man is no match for nature.

We cut to Rose and Cal in the stateroom and Cal slaps her and calls her a slut. Had just about enough of Cal by this point haha a crewman politely knocks and comes in telling them it is Captain’s orders to put their life vests on, dress warmly and head to the decks. Then we see 3rd Class as the crewmen burst in the room shouting ‘put your life belts on!’ and pushing the stack of them on the floor. Loved the little things like that showing the difference between the 2 classes that you could miss if you aren’t really invested in the movie. Capt Smith goes to the radio room and tells radio operator Jack Phillips to send out a CQD message and he is stunned asking again, “PHILLIPS: CQD? CAPT SMITH: That’s right. CQD. The distress call. That’s our position. sighs Tell whoever responds that we’re going down by the head. We need immediate assistance. PHILLIPS: Blimey” There could be another movie just about the transmissions between ships, couldn’t imagine being one of the ships that received the message and realizing with how fast Titanic was sinking there is no way any ship is gonna get there in time. I guess the Californian could have but that situation is a disaster in itself. How do you see rockets and not put it together that they are distress signals? Titanic was just a perfect storm of tragedy.

Rose, Cal, Ruth, Molly Brown are on deck but nobody is taking it seriously except for Rose who stops Mr Andrews and says she saw the iceberg and she see’s it in his eyes and asks for the truth. Mr Andrews drops the bomb that Titanic will sink in an hour or 2 which floors Cal and that she needs to get to a lifeboat asap but only tell who she must otherwise it will cause a panic. He reminds her about the lifeboats only being enough for half and then leaves. Radio operator Harold Bride tells Capt Smith, “Sir! Carpathia says they’re making 17 knots. Full steam for them, sir. CAPT SMITH: She’s the only one responding? BRIDE: The only one close, sir. She says they can be here in four hours. CAPT SMITH: FOUR HOURS!?… Thank you, Bride.” Just incredible acting as you can see the weight of all these certain deaths weighing on the Captain who knows he should have heeded theice warnings and told Bruce Ismay he will absolutely not light the last 4 boilers. The crewman and Officers have got some lifeboats ready so Officer Lightoller starts to bring the passengers towards them to load the first boats. After conferring with Capt Smith, they agree that it should be women and children first. At this point the band comes out onto the deck to play. Brutal scene as the 3rd class passengers wait behind a locked gate as a child asks her Mom whats going on and she explains the 1st class passengers get loaded up first and they are waiting for their turn. But we know that they have no intention of unlocking those gates. On deck, they are lowering lifeboats with disgustingly few people on them. There was only enough for half filled to the brim but I don’t think 1 lifeboat was filled to capacity on this night.

We see Lovejoy watching Jack who is handcuffed to a pipe and the bullet he keeps putting on the table rolls right back down to him so he says to Jack that the ship may sink. He gets up and walks over to Jack like he is gonna shoot him but then gut punches him saying ‘Compliments of Mr Caledon Hockely’ and leaves the room taking the handcuff key with him. So fn furstrating knowing that Jack would def survive without this bullshit but that’s just brilliant writing and why this story stands the test of time. Rose and Ruth are about to board a lifeboat as Cal asks if there’s room for him but they shut him down as Ruth shows her callousness, “RUTH: Will the lifeboats be seated according to class? I hope they’re not too crowded. haha ROSE: Oh, Mother, shut up! Don’t you understand? The water is freezing and there aren’t enough boats. Not enough by half. Half the people on this ship are going to die. CAL: Not the better half. MOLLY BROWN: Come on, Ruth, get in the boat. First-class seats are right up here. CAL: You know, it’s a pity I didn’t keep that drawing. It’ll be worth a lot more by morning. ROSE: You unimaginable bastard. MOLLY BROWN: Come on, Rose, darling. There’s plenty of room for you. Come on, Rose. You’re next, darling. RUTH: Come into the boat, Rose… Come. Rose, get into the boat. Rose. ROSE: Good-bye, Mother. RUTH: Rose! Rose, come back here! CAL: Where are you going? To him? To be a whοre to a gutter rat? ROSE: I’d rather be his whοre than your wife. CAL:No. No! – I said no! Rose spits right in his scumbag face Ruth: Rose! Please stop! Crewman: And lower away! RUTH: Rose!” Such a cathartic moment right up there with Bret Hart spitting in Vicne McMahons face lol

Jack is banging his cuffs on the pipes hoping someone will hear him but there is nobody around. Rose finds Mr Andrews who is trying to get people to put on life belts and he urges Rose to get to a lifeboat but she is going after Jack and begs him to tell her how to get to a room the master at arms would take a prisoner. Mr Andrews reluctantly tells her how to get there and it’s a miracle she remembered bc that’s a lot of directions haha Rose tries to get an elevator down to E Deck and they say the lifts are closed but she has had enough and shoves the guy telling him in no uncertain terms to take her down. As they get to E-Deck water starts to rush in and the crewman says he is going back up but she forces her way out and watches as the elevator goes back up so there is no turning back now. The way the crewman says “I’m goin back up! I’m Goin back up!” is another line I still use to this day like if I’m asking if someone downstairs needs anything lol the lights flicker off and on as Rose keeps going yelling Jack! over and over until finally he hears her and starts yelling and banging his cuffs until she finds the room. They embrace and he asks how she figured out he didn’t do it and she says she already knew. There is no key so Jack tells her to go find something to break the chain on the cuffs with and she leaves but not before giving him a kiss. Might seem ridiculous to some people but not to lovers.

Rose goes to get help and a crewman finds her but won’t listen ad she has to punch him in the face to get him to stop. He says to hell with you and runs but as she defeatedly leans against the wall, she sees an axe in the fire case so she smashes it and brings the axe to Jack. But the water has risen significantly since she left so she has to wade through and damn that would wake you up quick haha she makes it to the room and Jack tells her to take a couple practice swings first and it does not go well lol but they have no time so Jack corrects her grip and tells her to swing hard and fast. She does and by some miracle, nails the chain and Jack is free. He hits the water starts “OH SHIT! OH SHIT! Oh shit this is cold!” lol as this is going on we see passengers trying to bring luggage on the lifeboats as Officers toss them in the water. Cal has not given up his pursuit of Rose talking with Lovejoy who has been searching for her with no luck but mentions a man on the other side of the ship letting men on so Cal says that’s their play. On the lower decks we see Jack and Rose smash through a door as a crewman annoyingly shouts at them about breaking White Star Line property and having to pay for it until they both yell, “SHUT UP!” lol love that scene. Mr Andrews starts to realize how empty the boats are when they are being launched, “MR ANDREWS: Mr. Lightoller, why are the boats being launched half full? OFFICER LIGHTOLLER: Not now, Mr. Andrews. MR ANDREWS: There, look, 20 or so in a boat built for 65, and I saw one boat with only 12.. 12! OFFICER LIGHTOLLER: Well, we weren’t sure of the weight, Mr. Andrews. These boats may buckle. MR ANDREWS: Rubbish! They were tested in Belfast with the weight of 70 men! Now, fill these boats, Mr. Lightoller, for God’s sake, man! OFFICER LIGHTOLLER: Please, I need more women and children, please.” Can’t really blame Lightoller, nobody could fathom this reality so I think most were in shock.

In 3rd class, we see the people begging to be given a chance to live and they decide to open a a gate asking for women and children only but everyone just rushes forth so they start striking them and relock the gates as Tommy makes it to the front, “For God’s sake, man, there are women and children down here! Let us up so we can have a chance!” Powerful acting, you felt the peril the people were in. Jack reuinites with Fabrizio and they hug with Fabrizio saying the boats are all gone. Jack says they gotta get up to the top so they go to find a gate. In the Hockley suite we see Cal put the necklace in his pocket saying he makes his own luck and Lovejoy opens his jacket to reveal his gun saying so does he. Jack, Rose, Fabrizio, and Tommy find a gate that isn’t crowded but find the same thing as the other gate but they aren;t taking any shit this time, “JACK: Open the gate. CREWMAN: Go back down the main stairwell. -JACK: Open the gate right now! CREWMAN: Go back down the main stairwell. Like I told you. JACK: GODDAMN IT!! SON OF A BITCH!! CREWMAN: Stop that. JACK: Fabri, Tommy, give me a hand here! * Jack, Fabri and Tommy rip a bench out of the floor and aim it at the gate* ROSE: Move aside. Move aside. JACK: Come on, pull! Pull! Pull! ROSE: Move aside! CREWMAN: Put that down. ROSE: Move aside! JACK: One! Two! CREWMAN: Stop that! JACK: Three! they smash the gate with the bench almost knocking it down JACK: Again! they smash it again and this time it they break through As they all go through the gate, the crewman is still trying to stop them so Tommy knock him out lol his little “Go back down the main stairwell” was so annoying. Fcking LOVE this scene, Jack’s reaction was everything I was feeling and I just wish I could have been there to smash that gate with them.

The scene on decks is starting to descended into chaos as people try to jump in the boats and Officer Lightoller is having trouble controlling things so he has to escalate by pulling out his pistol, “OFFICER LIGHTOLLER: Get back I say or I’ll shoot you all like dogs. Keep order here! Keep order, I say. Mr. Lowe, man this boat.” The way he says, “Keep order, I say” is another line I still use to this day esp with my niece and nephew haha Cal and Lovejoy watch as the Officer manning a lifeboat has to fire his pistol in the air to keep people from jumping on them as they are being lowered and Cal says they don;t have much time. Lovejoy points him towards Officer Murdoch as the man that might let them into a boat so Cal talks with him and gives him a handful of cash to let him on a boat. Murdoch has look like he has no sue for money but has compassion for Cal so he will make a “deal.” On decks, Jack, Rose and Fabrizio try to find a boat as Tommy chuckles at the band playing, “Music to drown by. Now I know I’m in first class.” lol on Murdoch’s side there are barely any people so there is lots of room in the lifeboats and as he is about to lower, looks at Cal and asks if there is anyone else, giving Cal his chance at survival. But Lovejoy says he spottd Rose waiting for a boat on the other side, “with him.” Cal wrestles with the decision to get in the boat but ultimately decides to go after Rose and Lovejoy is not happy. Oh just fuck off already. Cal storms through to the other side, “CREWMAN: Sir! Sir, you can’t go through here. Sir, you can’t go through!” the speed and tone of voice that he uses to say those lines is one of those little things that always stands out and makes me chuckle.

While Jack and Rose wait for a boat they witness a brutal goodbye, “Girl: Daddy. Man: It’ll be fine, darling. Don’t you worry. It’s good-bye for a little while. Only for a little while. There’ll be another boat for the daddies. This boat’s for the mummies and the children. You hold Mummy’s hand and be a good little girl.” We know there is no boat for the Daddies so this hits hard and I think it’s actually based on a real exchange. Rose is moved by it and tells Jack she won’t get on the boat without him. Jack tells her to get in the boat as Cal shows up and echoes his statement. Cal says she looks a fright and puts his coat around her as Jack tries to convince her to get in, “JACK: Go on, I’ll get the next one. ROSE: No, not without you. JACK: I’ll be all right. Listen, I’ll be fine. I’m a survivor, all right? Don’t worry about me. Now go on, get on. CAL: I have an arrangement with an officer on the other side of the ship. Jack and I can get off safely, both of us. JACK: See? Got my own boat to catch. CAL: Now, hurry. They’re almost full.” Rose gets in the boat but Jack knows he won’t be in Cal’s boat, “JACK: You’re a good liar. CAL: Almost as good as you. Crewman: Easy now… and lower away. JACK: There’s no, uh– There’s no arrangement, is there? CAL: No, there is. Not that you’ll benefit much from it. I always win, Jack… one way or another.” Such a piss off but at least Rose was in the boat..

As the boat lowers Rose keeps her gaze locked on Jack and at the last moment, cannot bear to part from him so she jumps put of the boat back onto the ship as Jack pleads with her to stay on. The music here is the peak of the score for me, I wish it was an hour long. Always brings the emotions out of me. Rose runs through the ship to find Jack and Jack does the same as they meet at the Grand Staircase, kiss JACK: You’re so stupid. kiss Why’d you do that? kiss You’re so stupid, Rose. kiss Why did you do that? Why!? ROSE: You jump, I jump, right? JACK: Right. ROSE: Oh, God, I couldn’t go. I couldn’t go, Jack. JACK: It’s all right. We’ll think of something else. ROSE: At least I’m with you. JACK: We’ll think of something.” 1 of the most powerful moments of all time, always wanted a moment like that but the rarity of them is what makes it special. Incredible acting from Leo here. If you find a love like that, do me a favour and fcking cherish it. Seeing this is Cal’s breaking point as he grabs Lovejoy’s gun and start firing at Jack and Rose who would be dead if not for the wood carving on the railing. They are forced to run down towards the bottom of the ship putting them right back at square one. Cal finds himself in bad spot as things around him are about to collapse and he runs back to the deck.

Jack and Rose are trying to get back up and find a crying boy and they can’t leave him so Jack picks him up but water is about to burst through one end of the hallway so they go towards the other as the boys Father show sup. He angrily takes him from Jack and runs towards the dangerous end of the hall and it’s too late as the water bursts through and overtakes them. Jack and Rose make it to the surface and are stopped by a gate so they fight back towards a stairwell that is filling up fast. They find another locked gate but thankfully a Crewman passes and has the key and agrees to try to open it but in a panic he drops the keys and apologizes and runs away. Jack dives down to try to find them and does but can’t work the lock. With only seconds to spare, he gets the door unlocked and they head up to the deck. Cal see’s a crying child but ignores her and finds Murdoch again asking about their deal but Murdoch has had enough and throws Cal’s money in his face saying it can’t help either of them and he missed his chance. Tommy is in front of people waiting for a boat and yells at Murdoch to give them a chance to live but Murdoch yells for them to stand back and that he will shoot any man that comes forward. Some one jumps on the crowd from behind which pushes Tommy towards the boat and Murdoch panics and shoots Tommy dead as Fabrizio cries over him. Sucks bc I loved his character. Murdoch didn’t want to kill anyone, he was just trying to do what he thought best and the chaos finally overwhelms him so he salutes his fellow Officers and takes his own life. Sad bc he was a good man. The officers try their best to maintain what order is left, “Stand back, damn you. Get back, damn you.” Another quote I would use in real life.

Cal is desperate now so he goes back for the crying child and acts like he is her Father, making it to a boat and saying that he is all she has left in the wrld so they let him on the boat with her. He gets in the boat and takes the child back saying , “There, there” and the guy could not be more insincere. Jack and Rose are running through the 1st Class lounge and they find Mr Andrews who is sad to see Rose still on the ship, “MR ANDREWS: Oh, Rose. ROSE: Won’t you even make a try for it? MR ANDREWS: I’m sorry that I didn’t build you a stronger ship, young Rose. JACK: It’s going fast. We have to move. MR ANDREWS: Wait. gives Rose a life belt Good luck to you, Rose. ROSE: And to you.” Incredible performance, Mr Andrews was def 1 of my fav characters, so much it was tough to see Victor Garber play a villain the next time I saw him. A crewman tries to give Benjamin Guggenheim a life belt but he refuses, “CREWMAN: These are for you, Mr. Guggenheim. GUGGENHEIM: No, thank you. We are dressed in our best and are prepared to go down as gentlemen. But we would like a brandy.” Short scene but def 1 of the most memorable. Another short scene but very powerful when a mother with her baby approaches Capt Smith, “Capitan. Capitan, where should I go? Please.” Capt Smith can’t even answer he is so devastated knowing they both have no chance of survival at this point along with half the ship. A crewman tries to give Capt Smith a life belt but he waves him off and the shock of it all has basically made him a zombie as he walks around silently and locks himself in the bridge to go down with his ship. .

Things are deteriorating fast so the band says their goodbyes but Wallace Hartley knows he is going to die and would rather die doing what he loves so he starts playing ‘Nearer My God To Thee’ as the rest of the band returns to join him. As soon as he starts playing, I can’t help the tears from coming it’s just such an intense moment. You have the emotions of the band making their last stand as the ship sinks, the emotions of seeing the majestic ship slowly sink into the depths and you have the emotions of all the people that will never see another day. Add it all together with the amazing music in the background and I don’t know how anyone keeps it together watching this scene. As they play, we see parts of the ship going under water, a man and wife holding eachother as the water rushes under their bed and then the mother that was waiting in 3rd class at the gate decided to give up and has her children tucked into bed as she reads the end of a fairytale to them, “MOTHER: And so they lived happily together for 300 years in the land of Tir Na Nog, the land of eternal youth and beauty.” Makes it so much fcking worse to know how much room there was in the life boats and to remember Ruth and Cal’s disgusting comments about 3rd class passengers.

The song keeps playing and we see all the chaos on the ship with lifeboats having to be cut from the rigging and people swarming boats to get on as the water starts rushing onto the ship faster and faster. Cal’s boat is almost tipped over and he has to fight to keep people away so they won’t swamp it. Benjamin Guggenheim and his valet Giglio are absolutely terrified to see a wall of water coming their way and certain death right behind it. On the deck the water is rushing towards the band and Wallace Hartley tells his band, “Gentlemen, it has been a privilege playing with you tonight.” 1 of the most epic performances a band has ever played. The bridge is now completely under water as Capt Smith waits on his death which comes seconds later when the windows smash and the water rushes in. We see Jack and Rose trying to make their way to the back of the ship with Jack saying they need to stay on it as long as possible, due to the temp of the water I imagine. A man is in front of Jack moving slowly and reciting the prayer, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death..” so Jack says, “You want to walk a little faster through that valley there?” No doubt. We see various shots of dishes crashing to the floor, the water smashing through the glass ceiling over the Grand Staircase as Jacob Astor watches in horror, all the furniture in the rooms being thrown all around, water rushing down the hallways, people falling into the water, the fates of some people that we knew like Fabrizio being crushed by one of the falling funnels, just so Fn sad man I loved Fabrizio.

There is a priest hanging onto the ship with one hand and people with the other as it slowly tilts up with people all around him and he is reciting Revelation 21:1-4, “I saw a new heaven and a new earth when the first heaven and the first earth had passed away… and there was no more sea…And He shall dwell with them and they shall be His people and God Himself shall be with them…And God shall wipe away all the tears from their eyes and there shall be no more death. Neither shall there be sorrow or crying. Neither shall there be any more pain for the former world has passed away.” Powerful moment seeing people fight to survive with most losing that battle as these words are being recited. Jack and Rose make it to the back of the ship and Rose comments that this is where they first met. That moment seems like a lifetime ago. The ship has been pulled as vertical as it can get and we see the view from Molly Browns perspective on the lifeboat as she is stunned and can only say, “God almighty.” Couldn’t imagine being in the boats and seeing the Titanic like that, 3D viewing gives you a little taste of it and man it was awe inspiring. Inside the ship, brave Crewmen are trying to keep the power going but one gets electrocuted and that’s it as the power goes out for good. Shortly after, the ship breaks in half right where Lovejoy is hanging on and the ship comes crashing down to the water.

Jack realizes the ship is going to be pulled straight up on the air so they climb over the rail to wait for the final plunge, “JACK: We have to move! Give me your hand, I’ll pull you over. ROSE: I can’t! JACK: Come on, give me your hand! I’ve got you. I won’t let go. Come on, I’ve got you.” Just awful to watch people fall to their death including the iconic shot of a man hitting the propeller. The maid Trudy can’t hang on and falls to her death. Fabrizio’s girl he met on the ship is at the back of the ship too. Just pure chaos and death at the end. After Titanic has been sitting up straight for a couple minute, it starts to flood and go under, “JACK: This is it! ROSE: Oh, God! Oh, God! JACK: Hold on! ROSE: Oh, God! Oh, God! Oh! JACK: The ship is going to suck us down. Take a deep breath when I say. Kick for the surface and keep kicking. Do not let go of my hand. We’re going to make it, Rose. Trust me? ROSE: I trust you. JACK: Ready? Ready? Now!” And with that, Titanic takes her final breath and is lost to the depths of the ocean. Absolutely unbelievable, what an emotional rollercoaster.

Under water, they try to stay together but Rose is pulled away from Jack and heads to the surface herself. When she surfaces, it is really chaos with screaming and flailing arms as far as the eye can see. A man tries to use Rose to keep himself afloat but thank God Jack somehow finds her and punches the guy to get him off her. Jack emphatically tells her to swim away from the people and they keep swimming until Jack finds a floating door and tells Rose to get on it. She does but when Jack tries to get on it start to sink. He looks around and at not seeing anything he can use, resigns himself to the fact that he will die but Rose will live. Jack tries to comfort her saying the boats will come back, they just have to stay awake. People in the water are begging the boats to come back but none of them ahve made any movement towards them. Then we see why, “CREWMAN: You don’t understand. If we go back, they’ll swamp the boat. They’ll pull us down, I’m telling you. MOLLY BROWN: Knock it off. You’re scaring me. Come on, girls! Grab an oar, let’s go! CREWMAN: Are you out of your mind? We’re in the middle of the North Atlantic! Now, do you people want to live or do you want to die? MOLLY BROWN: I don’t understand a one of you. What’s the matter with you? It’s your men out there! There’s plenty of room for more. CREWMAN: And there’ll be one less on this boat if you don’t shut that hole in your face!” I know it’s not a great moment but me, my Dad and my brother use the last line as a joke to this day lol but there should have been a transfer of people immediately so they could try and save some people.

One boat finally starts a transfer, way too long after the sinking but at least some people tried. In the water, Rose starts to say her goodbyes to Jack but he won’t allow it, “ROSE: It’s getting quiet. JACK: shivering It’s just going to take them a couple of minutes to get the boats organized. I don’t know about you but I intend to write a strongly worded letter to the White Star Line about all this. ROSE: I love you, Jack. JACK: Don’t you do that. Don’t you say your good-byes. Not yet. Do you understand me? ROSE: I’m so cold. JACK: Listen, Rose, you’re going to get out of here. You’re going to go on and you’re going to make lots of babies and you’re going to watch them grow. You’re going to die an old, old lady warm in her bed. Not here. Not this night. Not like this. Do you understand me? ROSE: I can’t feel my body. JACK: Winning that ticket, Rose, was the best thing that ever happened to me. It brought me to you… and I’m thankful for that, Rose. I’m thankful. You must– You must– You must do me this honor– You must promise me, that you’ll survive, that you won’t give up no matter what happens no matter how hopeless. Promise me now, Rose and never let go of that promise. ROSE: I promise. JACK: Never let go. ROSE: I will never let go, Jack. ROSE: I’ll never let go.” Masterpiece love story, what a fn scene. A boat finally comes back but most people, including the mother and baby that approached Capt Smith, are long dead. Rose is still alive and singing ‘Come Josephine, My Flying Machine’ when she hears the boat so she tries to wake Jack but he is dead. So heart breaking to watch Rose slowly realize that he is gone, right when they could have been rescued. Once again they were so close and it gets ripped away this time for good.

Rose starts to lie down and give up but she remembers her promise and opens her eyes and tries to call the boat to her. Her voice is too weak but she sees a man that had a whistle so she knows that is her only chance but that means saying goodbye to Jack. Rose kisses his hand one more time and tells him she will never let go and watches him sink down to the depths of the ocean. Always hits hard the moment he sinks out of view and Rose cries harder. She makes it to the whistle and gets the attention of the boat and is rescued. 101 year old Rose narrates, “Fifteen-hundred people went into the sea, when Titanic sank from under us. There were 20 boats floating nearby and only one came back. One. Six were saved from the water myself included. Six… out of 1 ,500. Afterward, the 700 people in the boats had nothing to do but wait.. wait to die, wait to live… wait for an absolution that would never come.” The last line is one of my fav quotes. Aboard the Carpathia, it’s a tough scene with women looking for their husbands and not accepting that they didn’t make it. Rose sees Cal for the last time as he looks for her in 3rd class, “That’s the last time l ever saw him. He married, of course, and inherited his millions but the crash of’29 hit his interests hard and he put a pistol in his mouth that year or so I read.” So Rose def made the right choice bc if she stays with Cal then the stock crash would have destroyed her life anyways.

Rose is asked her name and says, “Dawson. Rose Dawson.” Such a great detail to add to the story. And then you remember the story Lewis was telling about her name being Rose Dawson and it all makes sense. “LEWIS: We never found anything on Jack. There’s no record of him at all. ROSE: No, there wouldn’t be, would there? And I’ve never spoken of him until now. Not to anyone, not even your grandfather. A woman’s heart is a deep ocean of secrets. But now you know there was a man named Jack Dawson and that he saved me in every way that a person can be saved. I don’t even have a picture of him. He exists now only in my memory.” Wow man what a performance, how do you deny her the Oscar? Brock is leaning on the rail and talking to Lizzy when he tosses away his cigar as she apologizes but he finally gets it, “Three years I’ve thought of nothing except Titanic but I never got it. I never let it in.” This moment is why I was hoping she would give him the diamond but she had other plans. Rose climbs up on the rail at the back of the Keldysh and reveals she still has the necklace and we see her finding it in the pocket while aboard the Carpathia. Then she decides to return the Heart of the Ocean to the ocean and drops the necklace in the water.

We see Rose’s pictures and realize that she did everything that her and Jack talked about doing. Rose passes away in her sleep and we are taken to the wreck of Titanic as it slowly comes back to life and end up at the Grand Staircase surrounded by all of the characters we love. Rose comes into view, walking up the stairs and waiting at the top is Jack who takes Rose’s hand and they kiss to a standing ovation from everyone. It just does not get better than that. Masterpiece ending to masterpiece love story.

Well after doing this review, there is no doubt in my mind now that Titanic is the GOAT movie. Not only did I enjoy watching it but it had a big impact on my life. Everything about it was done as good as it can be. I truly believe that the main theme from the score was a piece of heaven that God influenced us to create. I could listen to it forever. The acting on the movie was absolutely phenomenal but not just from the main cast but every extra knocked it out of the park. That’s why this movie seems so real, bc every person played their part and it brought out the best of everyone involved. Want to say a bit about a few characters and the actors/actresses:

Leonardo DiCaprio
Jack Dawson

-Incredible performance, this movie is not possible without Leo. The Oscar snub was a joke.

Kate Winslet
Rose Dewitt Bukater

-the beauty that launched the movie about the most legendary ship of all time. Just like Leo, you can’t do this movie without her incredible performance. So good it was ahrd to shake Rose watching her after but eventually didbc she is that good.

Billy Zane
Cal Hockley

-could say that he stole the show with his GOAT performance of Cal

Kathy Bates
Molly Brown

-man she crushed this so hard, just loved her character

Frances Fisher
Ruth Dewitt Bukater

-perfect casting, played her part to a T.

Gloria Stuart
100 yr old Rose

-such a great performance that made her feel like a real survivor, how she didn’t win the Oscar is beyond me.

Bill Paxton
Brock Lovett

-so good transitioning from money hungry to appreciating the legend. Crucial to selling the present day story.

Bernard Hill
Captain Smith

-nailed this casting so hard, couldn’t ask for a better performance.

David Warner
Spicer Lovejoy

-really great job standing out as a background character but also letting the main acts shine

Victor Garber
Thomas Andrews

-perfection. Made me want to have a conversation with him.

Jonathan Hyde
Bruce Ismay

-more perfection. Hit every big spot he needed to.

Suzy Amis
Lizzy Calvert

-great job making it seem real

Lewis Abernathy
Lewis Bodine

-seems like a real person, nailed the humour

Danny Nucci
Fabrizio

-crushed it, everyone needs a friend like Fabrizio

Tommy Ryan
Jason Barry

  • 1 of my fav characters, really great job

Ewan Stewart
1st Officer Murdoch

-crucial performance that he nailed

Ioan Gruffudd
Fifth Officer Lowe

-another great job

Jonny Phillips
2nd Officer Lightoller

-crushed it

I could list every cast member bc they all crushed it but wanted to highlight a few of the main cast.

I have always been looking for a love like Jack and Rose and I know some people might say that this movie gave an unrealistic portrayal of love but I don’t think that at all. Love is jumping off a lifeboat to stay with the person you love and if you aren’t willing to do that then maybe you haven’t found love yet. I’ve had every Jack and Rose moment up to the, “I changed my mind” moment. It didn’t work out for me but I don’t regret it bc it would have been worth it if it did. And it would break my heart to know I was with someone that wouldn’t jump off the lifeboat to stay with me. If this movie can teach anything, it’s that no matter if it is 3 days or a lifetime, true love is always worth it. I know some people wanting to criticize the movie talk about Rose’s husband being left out as Rose goes to Jack when she dies but if Rose and Jack were soulmates, then Rose’s husband has his own soulmate to reunite with in their heaven. I know it’s just a movie but for the sake of conversation, let’s talk about the spiritual meaning haha Everyone inherits the kingdom of God at the same time so there has to be a good place and bad place to wait when we die. The reason we don’t see Cal or Ruth is bc they are not waiting in the good place with all the other characters. That little Titanic heaven is where the passengers of Titanic will wait.

I’d be remiss if I did this without mentioning the conspiracies that surround Titanic since they seem to come up more these days. The only one I ever heard that seemed it could be true was that the influential elite of society that supported the federal reserve planned to have the Titanic go full speed into an iceberg field with all the influential elite opponents of the fedral reserve on board. Think of forcing someone to sprint through a minefield. Sure there is a chance you could make it through but 99% of the time you won’t make it and obviously the Titanic didn’t make it. This would explain why they ordered more speed despite serious iceberg warnings. But it doesn’t matter bc it could never be proven at this point. We should just appreciate the legend through museums and the movie and any other means that helps you enjoy r learn more about Titanic.

Seems crazy to say but the Titanic actually had charisma haha it really does from the design to the colours, you don’t want to look away. Can’t get more legendary than the largest moving object ever built, billed as unsinkable then sinks on it’s maiden voyage with over 1500 souls going into the ocean. I wish so much that Titanic had reached it’s destination and had a long run on oceans. Always fun to think about what Jack and Rose’s life would have looked like if they made it. I think they would have had a couple years of adventures using Jack’s painting and Rose’s acting to make ends meet. Rose becomes pregnant and Jack sells a painting for enough money to get their life started on a farm. Prob not Wisconsin bc of the winters haha but somewhere that their family would still call home to this day. Since they were both assumed dead, I don’t think they would have been part of WWI. As much as it sucks they didn’t get a life together, I’m glad they didn’t have Jack survive bc their love story wouldn’t have had the impact that it does now.

Really happy I did this, def forgot how much I loved it. I don’t know if we will ever see a movie where every single thing is knocked out of the park combined with the cultural impact on a level that Titanic did. I hope so bc I love the movie experience and the more movies that can make us feel like Titanic does makes for a better world. To get the level of performance we did from the extras across the board is almost unheard of. Then you have the main cast just owning every single role. James Horner borrowing a slice of Heaven with his score. And last but certainly not least, Mr James Cameron the director, the Captain, bringing this all together. The decisions he made were almost flawless. To take on an epic of this size and crush it like he did makes him the GOAT director. Cannot thank him enough for bringing us this movie bc it really meant a lot to my life. And I want to thank him for giving me an idea of what love is bc I know when I find it, it will be worth every single step to get there. This movie really was something special.

I’ll end this with the best piece of advice the movie gave us, in everything you do but especially love, make it count…
